THE KINGDOM OF CORFU ANGEL CATS

Our sanctuary is located in Kastellani Mesis, in the middle of Corfu. Here we have a secluded and safe kingdom for our cats. In our 3000 m2 plot of land they can climb in the old olive trees, play and hunt in the field or rest in the secure environment. We have two winter shelters where they can stay warm, dry and safe when the rain and thunderstorms are roaming. Here we keep the small kittens and the sick cats separated from the others.

Many of the cats we rescue have had such a tough life on the street, so we decide to let them stay in the sanctuary to ensure that they don't have to go back to a dangerous and miserable life again. The poor souls have suffered enough. Today about 100 cats and kittens are living in the Kingdom. All our cats are neutered when they are old enough.

RESCUE

Many of the stray cats are in very bad conditions when we find them. Big wounds, injuries, parasites, infections and malnutrition are very common. Many of them have an eye infection that will lead to blindness if not treated. Some have broken legs after being hit by a vehicle or a piece of heavy garbage.

The cats that are living in the colonies around the garbage bins are the most unfortunate, vulnerable cats on the island. They have no kind neighborhood, no shelter from the rain and cold, neither do they have a reliable food supply, nor a safe place to sleep. As the bins often are located alongside a main road, many of them are killed or injured in the traffic.

We do our best to rescue them. Sick and wounded cats are taken to the veterinary for treatment. Afterwards they are being looked after, medicated and nurtured until they are healthy enough to go back to the cat colony, if it is in a safe location. If not, they are given a good life in our sanctuary. We don't put cats back on a dangerous road.

TNR - Trap, Neuter, Return

Neutering is the most important strategy we have to reduce the numbers of stray, unwanted cats.  Cats reach sexual maturity at four to five months and can have two to three litters per year, each with at least three kittens. The kittens will soon be producing their own offspring. The number of offspring from just one female, can increase to thousands after a few years.

Corfu Angel Cats Rescue & Care therefore tries to collect as many stray cats as possible for TNR. We find cat colonies around the garbage bins, but also in the parks, at the beaches, around reastaurants and hotels.

Every week in the summer we take 30 - 40 cats for TNR. During the surgery they also get anti parasite treatment, and a small cut in their ear, a visible sign that they have been neutered. After the treatment they are kept inside during recovery, normally one day for the males and three days for the females, but longer if needed, and then they are returned to their colony if it is in a safe location.

FOOD FOR LIFE - Winter Feeding Program

At the end of October the tourists have left the island. Hotels, restaurants and cafeterias are closing down, and tourist villages are abandoned. Only the strays remain, without any food supplies. They are desperately searching  in the garbage bins for some leftovers to survive on, but in vain, because the bins are empty. Kittens are dying in the bins because they don't manage to get out, or they are hit when someone throws heavy objects in the bin without checking.

Due to hunger, wounds and malnutrition, the strays easily get infections or other illnesses. They suffer in silence.

In order to help the strays make it through the winter and to reduce their sufferings, Corfu Angel Cats has started a Winter Feeding Program. Every month we buy and deliver sacks with quality food to local volunteers in 23 villages, to be distributed to the cat colonies in daily meals.

The food is costing a lot, and to continue to deliver Food for Life we need your support. There are other villages that need food and the more we get, the more we can help.
